Bentonite is a highly plastic clay composed of at least 85% montmorillonite, named after Fort Benton, USA. Known for its bleaching properties, it’s also called bleaching clay. Bentonite primarily contains smectite-group minerals—hydrous aluminum silicates with iron, magnesium, and either sodium or calcium. Its properties like swelling, hydration, water absorption, viscosity, and thixotropy make it valuable across various industries.
Mined through quarrying, bentonite is solid even at 30% moisture. It’s first crushed, optionally activated with soda ash, then dried to about 15% moisture. Depending on use, it’s sieved into granules or milled into powder. For specialized uses, it’s purified, acid-activated, or modified with organics to create organoclays.
